Ongoing Restructuring/Retrenchment at Seagate Singapore (Update 6)
Update 6: (14/05/2009):
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Hardware manufacturer Seagate Technology said Wednesday that it would reduce its staff by 1,100 employees.
Seagate, based in Scotts Valley near Santa Cruz, Calif., said the reduction of 2.5% of its total workforce was part of an ongoing restructuring to bring its company into profitability by fiscal year 2010.
The company’s stock bumped up slightly in pre-market trading.
Seagate, a manufacturer of hard drives and data storage appliances, said it was trying to bring its development, marketing and administration costs below $300 million per quarter. Through the reductions, the company intends to save $125 million annually.
The company said that reductions would be “largely complete” by July, and would cost the company $72 million, primarily through termination costs.
Earlier this year, the company announced salary reductions and the closing of a research facility in Pittsburgh, as well as two other facilities.
Update 5 (15/04/2009):
- Another re-structure plan, news of the further cut will be announced during the release of quarterly report on 21th Apr.

One of our readers just sent us news that Seagate Singapore is going through a retrenchment exercise this week. With a number of employees, including supervisors being laid off.
Retrenchment package for those who worked for less than 3 years is only 2 weeks pay. is believed to be 1 month for every year of service.

Our source is telling us that as many as 60 employees were laid off from the testing department, and it seems that all departments were affected by the restructuring.

We are hearing from a reliable source that at least 300 employees were laid off from the Woodlands plant, while only a few from the AMK plant. Retrenchments at all levels. The exercise should be continueing for the next week.

Update 4 (Feb 12): Straits Times reported on 11th Feb that Seagate “retrenched an undisclosed number of staff”. A company spokesman declined to give details of how extensive the retrenchment exercise here was. However, The Straits Times understands that the number of retrenchments was not large, and that no manufacturing facilities were shut down. In January, Seagate announced that it planned to cut 3,000 jobs worldwide, comprising some 6 per cent of its global workforce.
Retrenched staff with more than a year’s service were given a month’s pay for every year with the company; staff with shorter periods of service were given two weeks of pay.
The company has 9,000 staff here, a number that has remained largely unchanged in the past few years, said a company spokesman.

Well I thought if you work at seagate for 3 years and above then you are entitled for 1 year , 1 month pay for each year of service. Anyone can verify this?
I’m from the sputter department and my team, C-team in W2 which handles the 200L lean sputter machine no one been affected so far except in the A team which 3 of them were line guys. Sputter department is the lowest hit amongst other departments.

Apparently this restructuring/retrenchment, many EAs will lose their jobs due to the implementation of cost cutting, by introducing maintainence MAs. Three MAs = one EAs one month salary.
Lets say the MA salary is $600 per month, and the EA salary is $1800. Might as well hire the MA to perform the heavy labour job. Cost cutting.
As most of you know sputter is the backbone of the media plant in singapore which consists alot of heavy duty job compare to other department in the line.
I never imagine seeing a SES earning a salary 3.1K a month just to do the heavy labour job, which you can question their troubleshooting/analytical skills which an EA earning 1.8K who out perform him.
3 MAs to do the job of 1 EA!
Why no go further to hire a foreigner at $800 to do 3 MAs’ job! Cost even less!
You will see lower yield rate, meaning more cost spend on hitting the expected target, when target can’t reach, lower the cp and then end consumers will have HDD with poor reliability! Thank you very much Seagate!
Next month Seagate hiring more MAs to replace the EAs. Just wait and see. Even diploma holders blunder in the line. I guess it will be worse if MAs are recruited into sputter maintainence.

seagate actually has a lot of reservefunds. billions of dollars..retrenchment can be avoided if the staff at seagate were hardworking..for shift 12 hours time spent on productive work is only 6 hours..the rest is break , slack, start work late and get ready go home early /// for 8 to 5 staff..frankly speaking..work 4 hours..break 2 hours..the rest is unneccessary work suck as back stabbibg and ball carrying…if seagate were to implement strict discipline conducts on employees..it will be definitely be a very fruitful company for years to come..no point blaming economic crisis..even if they was not a crisis..the retrenchment would still come..a lot of unnecassary positions…other company have a director..seagate has 3 for the same amount of workload..same goes for manager , ea and operator..seagate contracts out to so many cleaners..each cleaner in charge of a toilet the whole damn day!!…frankly..the finicial director of seagate kept too much money in his/her own pocket and yet still so many money..so to show people he not taking money..hire more unessary staff…finally..i hope the arab guy who bought manchester city buys seagate..muacks!

It’s hard to experience that my colleagues were retrenched and I feel the pain and heat too… Heard that in the next month or next few months, there will be another round of retrenchment.. Hope that’s not true. Employee with experience of 1 Year and above earned 1 month pay for every 1 year service. And those worked less than 1 year, they only got 2 weeks pay. And employee who left behind are also not safe. Probably some of them will be hit in the next round. Let’s wish employee who were retrenched able to find the new job asap.
Director Salary is at least 2 – 3 times of a manager.

Thank goodness I don’t have to worry being retrenched. I was lucky just before the downfall of the financial crisis last october, I applied for a job in the government sector. And after 5 months, this coming wednesday I’m going to sign the appointment letter at Vital.

We are prepared during the first day…the HR personnel has already said so during my very first day of work when I joining Seagate…

The second round involve only MAs…and rumour moving around is 8th March …when all 38 will be retrench off.
Seagate US shares continue to under perform and market continue to be weak. The strong competitor WD is now moving into the strong sectors of enterprise drives, which is bad news for Seagate again.
This company for the past years had been thru too much internal political struggles and also poor leaderships. It has expanded too much by taking in non value added staffs from acquisition.
March retrenchment will not be the end. In US research centers will be killed by 50%, so it will be likewise in Singapore. I estimate 2500 lost jobs for all levels.

We keep hearing differents blunders happening everyday at this critical time, today again there is another mistake on SV502, Cameron, stn#15 PDC300, gas line connected wrongly during conversion at CNY time frame resulting Hc High & MRT Low issue for almost two days !
I have mentioned many times to do the job carefully and accordingly, however, the blunder rate is still at very high level.
From immediately effect, all Blunders happened/discovered at any time, respective team Sup needs to come out a blunder report using the STD template. I want to see why this happens, who makes the blunder and whatis the measure to prevent in future.
Starting from SV502, respective team sup who did this task needs to get back to me with the package. We need to reduce the blunder rate to 0 !!

Hi All Day Team Cell Leads,
Seem like lots of guys are taking late lunch these days and some are as late as 4pm in the afternoon.
This is a bad lunch time behaviour for anyone. Its bad for the individual health and it reflect poor management/planning on this issue.
With immediate effect, Lunch Time is betw 11am to 2.30pm. EVERYONE MUST FINISH LUNCH BY 2.30PM.
Whoever finish your lunch after 2.30pm must notify your sup/manager with valid reason.
CELL LEADs must arrange lunch time betw these time with all your team members.
This will reflect your planning skill to manage your cell members.
Ocassional if 1 individual have to go late lunch due to work is reasonable to do so.
But if HALF cell have to go late lunch is reflected as poor management/planning by the Cell Leads.
This requirement is our SOP (Standard Operation Protocol) to ensure everyone have proper lunch break.
IMPORTANTS:
If any accident ocurred and root cause is guys missed their proper lunch break.
Cell Lead and Team Sups will be under heavy interrogation.

Basically a yes, China MA that contract going to ends their contract will not be renew as for Malaysian, Singaporean, Singapore PR…depend on how effective you carry balls.
MA surviving the 3rd March(W1 only):
Existing MAs will transfer to W2 or W3 to further make full use of. MA that transfer during the slowdown period(Oct 08 – Present), are cater under W2/W3 Headcount.
Maint:
No retrenchment till June 09 this year because the first cut on the 5th Feb had significantly loosing a number of manpower and experts.
Maint survive after 5th Feb:
Personnel are transfering to W2 and W3 for further refurbish
Expected from June onwards:
During June when W3 out of product, and W1 closing down, I can forsee another major retrenchment, probably end of June, if the economy still not recover and due to loosing/cutting new orders that should have comes in during the mid-year period.

I understand the feeling during this very uncertain period. In chinese(I am angmo) they used to say “Love Deep Deep yet Hate also deep deep”. That’s why I know you all LOVE Seagate DEEP DEEP. Believe in yourself that Seagate would turnaround in next couple of months or Quarters. If I have money, I sure buy up 10,000 or 20,000 STX at such US$4 something which is under price. Woodlands is doing more layoffs than AMK is because our leader Chee wants to save his AMK freinds and transfer them to Woodlands. He wants to get rid of Woodlands pioneers who delivered all these years and made this place successful so he can save his old freinds from AMK. SHAME ON YOU CHEE.

I’m sorry to hear about your plight. If you work hard, you also have to work smart. I’m sure many of you seen people whose attitude are really bad example taking many Mcs, urgent leaves, late for work, but still they are able to get promoted.
You have to work smart brother. Carry your supervisor balls. Show him you are able to be independent in your work.
In front of your team leader show your working attributes
like team work, punctuality etc.. But behind his back,
work relaxing brother (RELAX). That’s how you survive in the working world, or unless you are really hardworking I can’t
really say much.
I myself am waiting to be retrenched Management are doing a good job introducing
cost cutting measures like hiring the MA’s to perform
simple maintenance jobs.

Frankily speaking the ones I pick this round are all the ones who in my blacklist… 1 SE bcos I took his design and idea and tell big F who stupigly believe me all this time… The other 2 are the last 2 from the original gang of 6 who are the poineer of MDW…. I am disappointed in SEAGATE bcos they did not heed govt call to try retain more sillyporeans. In fact, majority of the those layoff are capable and lowly paid sillyporeans. While those exorbitantly paid FT but highly ignorant and definitely technically not inclined are retained. All 5 dir cut are not FT rite? The culture and environment are getting from bad to worse cos we daily hear some much complaint in the canteen about favoritism, bias, carry balls and buddy system…. The root cause is the upper management is aware about all the craps but not doing anything…Gd luck to all my seagate friends…
Not all bad for some kena retrenched lately. Like me, just like kena 4D lottery 2big 24small (private), take 100k and put in the bank. Now song song part time drive taxi, still got income, monthly get about 2.5k, only down by 1.5k short of my seagate pay. But life is like heaven. Tell my wife work 10 hours but actually drive only 6hrs. the other 3 to 4 hrs hang around Geyxxxx coffee shop, buy a cup of coffee and talk cxxx with China vegetable. “Tien Tong”.
Life is always good at Seagate. If only they can create another new post after SES for me to climb further like Super SES or Marvel SES I would be much much happier!
I am very frustrated that my MDW anyhow retrench people bcos i do not how to carry balls. Those who carry duck balls will definite not get retrench bcos they are all buddy buddy, who can go gey**** and joo ch*** to call gals for ons. I also know that they anyhow spend company’s $$, so that they can get some $$ from their Vendor in return. Those who carry balls (those who do not know how to do their job) will get promoted every year, just like SOP item. Canteen always packed with McDonald’s, fresh fruit juice, vegetarian food, you name it, they have it, now only serves 2 vege 1 soup(luan luan kong one-lah). Last time even have chatered bus out to AngMoKio centre during lunch (canteen too packed). Now walk to shengseong food court near by.
Woodlands, expand from 1 plant to 2 and proudly announced the 3rd plant. Now, plant 1 to shut down (reliable source), plant 3 run 25%, on/off shut.
Then they built plant at Johore Bahru but still buy from Fuji, showa, komag(heard boh liao).
Seagate is rich! They can afford 3K salary technician. Any other company can match our benefit? I think NONE!

The first Monday morning after I was axed, I woke up very early as usual, got myself changed and thought of going for coffee, you know what happened?? unknowingly I boarded the bus which I used to take to RMO to work. When the bus hit Chong Pang then I suddenly realised I was already chopped. Haha.
Last week my taxi driver friend have some personal matter need to go oversea, I happily take over his cab driving part time. Not bad, average get $180 net for less than 9hrs. I am driving not so much for money (Money I have), but just to kill time. Next week I am going to Genting, want join me?
I am telling the truth so no need to get personal here. My salary is just above average only. Like it or not, I will not leave this company as other company can not match my benefit at all!

Heard the shutdown is going to be carried out on WW38. Anyone can confirm?
yes its confirmed… WW38 shut down. W1 and W3 shut down. W2 slow down. Heard 3 months Woodlands production will be very slow. Many will be forced to take leave during these period and more retrenchment will kick in. Heard from production supervisor. True or not 100% I not sure.(Rumours).
Of course sg has to go first due to their higher pay & better child care leave for guys alone 6 days oh . FT r cheap & ready trained not by sg gov but by home gov . So even if FT perform slighthly below par who cares they are CHEAP !!!!!!!!!!!

I can’t change this habit because working in Luber has so much free time and a lot of spare time to spare, tea-break time and idle time is a lot and too much. We can sit in canteen whole day and not even stepping into the line once, we can go for 2-3 hours break and no one caught us.

I just got retrenched on 3rd march. I wk fm young til menopause period now. Really grateful to seagate on behalf for C team old aunties.
Now i’m going to said about all these years what i’ve seen in seagate AMK:
1) not happy with supervisors,i’ve been working @ clean room for years but seldom c supervisors enter this room.If got enter, only concern y never hit target? Place which u can see the supervisors are place where u r able to smoke and canteen.
2)not happy with lead girl cos they anyhow use their power over us. They act as if they hv shares with seagate. OT, take leave also got to go through their approval.In clean room especially C-team,can only see old aunties working hard there and standing for 11hrs (minus 1hr break). Cant even sit for 5min.They will kick off the chair.Even pregnant also cant be spare when line is off. So unhuman.Everyone stand til leg numb and swollen. Touch ur conscience,If were u, how will u feel? When the machine is spoilt,We cant even sit and rest for awhile.These aunties even thou they are not appreciate for the hard work that they did for seagate, must also think of their effort and heart they gave.All these aunties worked til their kids are grown up. They hv aready contribute their kids for country.
3)Super pissed off with the technician.They only know how to use the Pc for their own email,internet and play games in the PC.Not important dept,they don’t want to help us to do.As for break,they will break very long hrs,sometimes cant see them for a period of time,hence,the container to contain the disc kena one of the aunty’s hand ( cos she don’t want to trouble the technician and most importantly is you cant’s find them when needed.).
4)not happy with Mens’s GH, CWO sld be men’s work but work done is always by old aunties. Those men’s GH are always drinking tea( lim teh) or playing computer. If old aunties can work these heavy duty job, y need the GH?
P/S: Now we really miss the supervisors ( NAME: K.H LEE )bcos he’s a very good supervisors.He’s also working with operators like us, don’t mind his position is higher than us.Now we old aunties got our retrenchment package, now can go for holiday using these $ and stay at home taking care our grandchildren and shake legs at home. Very grateful to seagate!

Seagate Asia operations is a big chaos – adopting negative and destructive Asia management styles in one side, and on the other side used the American welfare practises for it advantage. Instead of working united towards Seagate survival, upper and mid management are fighting among themselve for power and planting spy seeds into other department, truth talents are chopped or exploited and rotten apples are branded as great leaders. Corrupted practises, lazy work attitude, lack of motivation, poor quality practise, manipulated reports are everywhere!!!
After reading so much writings here. We could see that it’s too late for Steve to turn back the clock. The whole structure is infested. Anyway, Steve is a mean business managed man who read dollars and cents, he would mind to close any site that don’t make much $$$ growth and that is call Business.

You are right. People have the right to be selfish. They should be happy when they still get OT. But anyway, those who get OT pays aren’t getting a decent pay to start with anyway.
All companies have politics. Politics is part of life. Management holds information that are not public. Its whether one work smart, or labor for nothing. If one cannot sell one’s work and achievements and allow others to take credit, then one is foolish. If one robs others work and claims his own, its cunning. Many Or-Pua directors work that way. Every where is the same. Seagate likes to employ black society, because they can talk. Everyone has the right to open his own mouth and state his point. If one do not exercise it, they take the bitter consequences!
The Singapore system train all Singaporeans to be robots. Muted, just work, don’t ask questions. Don’t complain.

i find this statement kinda great excuse for the management. the management always fails to identify potential or good worker. the manager/supervisor also has the responsibility to see to it that his/her staffs get the appropriate recognition for their efforts. so i find the management is the problem.
i also agree in politics is everywhere. if so, why still ask ppl to stay focus in work? so focus as in focusing in the politics? this is something i can’t stand in a technology cmpy
manufacturing is already long-dead in singapore, not happening now.
if given 20mths retrenchment package, i believe they will be more happy than staying! we don’t know what’s going to happen in 20mth’s time, might ended with nothing. if u get 1mth for each yr of svc, just take it. might not be that amount later. & for those who managed to escape the axe, i believe the fate is worse-off, imagine with the workforce down-sized, the workload still remain same or more.
to some or many ppl, these OT (aren’t getting a decent pay to start with anyway) mean something to them & their family. might not be much but better than nothing! although they are really nothing comparable to the top management.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Hard drive maker Seagate Technology said Wednesday it plans to cut about 1,100 jobs, or 2.5 percent of its global work force, as part of a restructuring plan.
Seagate said the cuts are needed to reduce costs and help the company reach its goal of becoming cash flow and earnings positive in fiscal 2010.
The restructuring plan, which is expected to be largely complete by the end of July, is expected to result in about $72 million in pretax charges. The charges will primarily be incurred in the June 2009 quarter and consist mainly of employee severance costs that are expected to be mostly paid in the September 2009 quarter.
The restructuring plan is expected to generate savings of about $125 million a year, Seagate said.

Seagate expected to make jobs cuts in Derry
Wednesday, 13 May 2009. Seagate was expected to announce the loss of up to 24 jobs at its Londonderry plant today.
The company has yet to confirm that jobs will be going but it is believed that there will be cuts and these will be restricted to senior management and engineers.
It is believed that this is an attempt by the hard disk drive manufacturer to push down operating costs at its Springtown plant. Announcements are expected at its plants around the world.
Earlier in the year the company had said that it would be making up to five people redundant.
The company employs 1,400 people at its Derry plant and has worked to keep the factory open through a shorter working week at the start of the year and a 10% pay cut.
Workers had recently gone back to a full working week.
Seagate — as part of its commitment to the city — had introduced an apprenticeship programme for workers in looking to create a wider skills base.
Last year Seagate closed the doors at its Limavady plant with the loss of 900 jobs.
Mayor Gerrard Diver said: “Seagate have been one of our first rate employers. They have reacted in a very positive way to the challenges they have faced in recent years and we support them in their efforts to keep the plant open.
“I know that is cold comfort for anybody who is about to lose their job but it is a reflection of the very difficult times we are in at the moment.”
Twenty-five jobs are to go at Seagate Technologies in Londonderry, the BBC understands.
1,400 people work at the plant in Springtown, which manufactures hard disk drives.
Senior management is expected to announce the cuts in meetings with workers on Wednesday. A statement is due from the company later.
The bulk of the job losses are expected to be in high-paid posts in management and engineering.
In January, workers in the factory had their hours cut by 10% because of the economic downturn.
Their hours were only restored in full in April.
Similar announcements are expected in Seagate’s factories across the world.

Thought it has been known for a long time (10 years) ago,
that this Electronic Manufacturing Industry will be a sunset industry in Singapore.
Only today 4th Aug 2009 that Seagate announced is closing Ang Mo Kio plant. You bet in a couple of years (2 years…) Seagate will close all operations and plants in Singapore.
Already Motorola is gone, now Seagate. Next to come should be HP.
