amd_logo.png

A source just write in to tell us that AMD Singapore has started its retrenchment exercise today and will continue tomorrow. Number of lay offs is still unknown.

This follows the ‘salary deduction exercise‘ which happened last week.

If you are working at AMD or have more info on the retrenchment exercise don’t hesitate to contact us.

I’ve confirmation from a hotel sales manager that Hudson Recruitment (office at Suntec) has retrenched a handful of their staff during this month. They were asked to leave the office immediately accompanied by security guards & had to asked collegues to bring their belongings downstairs to them.

I’ve been laid off today from AMD..now back at home relaxing :) Its happening in every department & every level. I guess a 30% cut is what they are looking at. So 600+ might be gone from the current 2000 over staff. Actual numbers are not made public yet.

Hmm. I heard news that Standard Chartered also retrenching. Any confirmation?

ex-AMDer
which dept r u in ?

Heard b & a shift now on-going retrenchment.

So how’s the package?

The package is not as good as the one in November 08. Today they retrenched about ~300… tomorrow will have another round. Than coming March/April.. will also have another round….

what u mean not as good ? is it the <3 years getting 2 weeks instead of 1 month?

wow if march & april as axe they really down size a lot spore more and more jobless people.

Sian……..

I have a regional financial analyst role with a US MNC. If anyone is keen, please let me know. Thanks!

how amd select who to be retrench?

The best they get rid of management politicians as if they own the company. How about the bastard Vincent Yap was he still there? He should be the first one to be kicked off and hanged.

Mubarak should be shot in the head along with Ariel & Arul. All the filipinas should just FCUK OFF.They should be terminated without given any cents.

i will not be axed so easily. you guys must learn how to work smart and not work hard like cow!

Life is like this….nothing is fair in this world of our.

Hey that’s a very interesting viewpoint of Singapore. Which hotel did you stay at when you were there. Maybe we should meetup sometime when we’re both together in singapore. Alternatively you can visit Yellow Pages Singapore to check up on the latest happenings in Singapore. Small country but I simply love it.

hi cheng.. why dont you look at yourself in the mirror first and why you were kick-out in the first place.. maybe, you should be the one needs shooting in the head because of your fuck-up performance in AMD.

Hi guys, please keep your cool. No point getting so worked up over issues with the company or its management. Look at it this way, all of us can curse and swear here, nothing will happen. Things will still remains the same. The same old group of people will still get on with their life, screwing around with their so-call management skill-set. Unless someone from the head office (AUSTIN) come to knows about the colorful & wonderful culture of AMD Singapore, else nothing really matters.

You guys can go on cursing, swearing or even condemning people like Vincent Yap, Mubarak, Ariel, BH, Mike T., alot of those senior level guys or managers or even the VP of AMD Singapore. Seriously speaking, nothing really matters to them as they are still getting their pay checks and getting on with their life. For people like you guys, you will only ended up really looking like an idiot making a fool or mockery out of yourself.

Therefore, just save your energy and maybe stop making ourselves a fool. Who knows those fellows might really enjoy reading this blog and be proud that they are been mentioned. No point… forget about it…

Hi “Nobody”,

You are smart! I like it!

All the existing cows in amd, don’t be happy.your turn will come soon..

We will all have our turn on the chopping board…
chill-out and enjoy your pot.
We have been informed and ask to prepare.

Hi Cheng, this is good for you…

1) Don’t take it personally.

Your retrenchment should not lower your self-esteem. You have to pick up your confidence as your family needs your financial contribution. A job does not define the true worth of a person.

2) Find out more about the industry.

Do some research and learn about new developments within the industry of your competencies.

3) Improve your skills.

After researching, you should find out more the available courses to upgrade yourself. It is never to late to improve.

4) Pick up new skills.

If you want to switch to a different industry, you can use the retrenchment exercise as an opportunity to make the switch.

5) Taking a part-time job.

In the midst of searching for a full-time job, you can take on a part-time job. It will help in your current cash-flow.

6) Manage your finances.

The time-lag to your new job may pose a strain for your expenses. Get your family together and have an open communication about the situation. It is advisable to plan a family budget and eliminate non-essential items.

7) Call up your friends.

Your friends may provide fresh information about new job openings.

8) Join online communities.

There are a number of HR online communities that advertise job-openings.

9) Exercise regularly.

Job-seeking in this current climate needs a lot of stamina. Don’t neglect regular exercise and healthy eating.

10) Volunteer.

Helping other people who may be more needy than yourself will help you put things in perspective and dispel constant self-pitying. You will be more confident when you approach the job-market.

11) Improve your communication skills.

Hi, past-way:
I like point #9. Can’t agree more with you on some of your comments.

from what i can for see sooner or later they will move their prod to suzhou.
think to the bright side.

retrench early still can get better pay out fee. the last to leave might not even had the better package as the early one.

Hi Vincent Yap and all,

As far as i know & my understand is concern, smart guy don’t last in AMD Singapore. You can be very clever, very hardworking, very value-added, and etc. All those are actually secondary in AMD Singapore. I’ve seen and been through my fair share in AMD Singapore. The culture and practice within AMD Singapore management no doubt is in high questioning, and the management people should really reflect upon on what actually went wrong instead of politicizing it. Ever since April 2008, things had been taken for the worst, the word “retrenchment” started popping out every now and than. To put it in better perspective, since April 2008 till now…. how many people are actually working in AMD Singapore when retrenchment had been in the mouth and mind of everyone?

Like what a few guys here had mentioned. Sooner or later the most of the production in AMD Singapore will be shifted to Suzhou. Should be taking place very soon. The are now starting to shift equipments (in hundreds i suppose) to Suzhou.

In every business sense, its the right move the whole production to Suzhou as AMD Singapore had shown itself to be incapable in producing results and meeting target + deadline. They are all talks, meetings with totally lagging reaction time and NOT wanting to hold responsibilities. In layman term, its No Action Talk Only. In fact i would totally support the idea of totally shutting down the whole operation of AMD Singapore.

With what “boy” had mentioned, its the thoughts and feeling of most of the guys in AMD Singapore right now. Almost everyone wanted to be retrenched as they are afraid that (who knows how many rounds more of retrenchment) the next round of retrenchment, the retrenchment package might be further reduced. In bad times like this, people are really worry about losing a job, not getting a new job and not having money to go through tough time.

Like what “past-away” had mentioned, i totally agree with him. However, let’s face it, how many of us can actually have the “right-mentality” to go through what was listed and recommended by “past-away”.

I guess like what “john” had mentioned, chill-out, give ourselves a break, we will all have our chances…

So i guess all of us just have to try our very best to keep our cool, and trying to be as sane as possible find the next possible way out of it.

I always try to tell myself this.. Tough time don’t last, tough people do. No matter how unfair we felt AMD Singapore had treated us, or how prejudice they have treated us.. life still have to go on for us. We still need to move on, and try to get ourselves a new job and earn money for survival.

good one “nobody”

kiss my ass

anyway we should get rid of the old management politicians .
to survive is to be multi-tasking and not employing alot opeople and can’t even get a simple job done .HBI is a very good example

Look on the bright side of things, at least u got package. If the company wants you to stay with them until they go bankrupt and got nothing to pay you, are you willing?

yes ,how long can the package last in the first place the company should use able personnel to manage the operation.instead of employing so many ppl.As I’ve mention earin my early mail.should the management think do the company require so many managers to manage the company .HBI to me is alway a white elephant and a redundant pocess .Amd style when everything is fine the management get the credit. When some thing went wrong the management will look for scapegoat.

SEND THE FILIPINOS HOME!
Basically what they are doing in AMD doesn’t really contribute anything except enjoying long tea-breaks with sub-standard capabilities that a local Tan Ah Kau can do…
Name anyone from Philipines that contribute anything to AMD or Singapore except giving us Tanjong Pagar…

What do the pinoys bring?
Without them…. AMD can’t operate…

they bring in thier ‘experiences’ from a country that doesn’t have jobs or jobs that doesn’t exist in philippines….

they bring in thier ‘knowledge’ or ‘degrees’ from universities that is nowhere near the top 200

they bring in thier ’skilled’ profession that had built philippines to become one of the most undeveloped countries in South East Asia……

Long live Pinoys!

ha ha ha so true…. they have breakfast break, morning tea break, lunch break, afternoon tea break, early dinner break ….that is why they should be given a permanent break!!! They can’t stop talking…That’s the reason that there are so many call centres in their country!

alwaly remember in mind they must not be cleverer then then the boss ,or else the boss need to be worry. That why
is good to hv this group of FT idiot.Feed them enough
and they’ll never create problem for you.and your
place is be very very secure.

seriously i think u guys who’re bashing Filipinos are very shallow. there’re always black sheep among the herd, same with Malaysians, Singaporeans, Chinese (from China).

anyway i agree that there’re just too many redundant managers around. politicizing issues instead of solving them. every fxxking work also have to draw clear responsibilities on who own them when we can work as a team to solve it. and in the end things never get done. and some fxxked up managers just care about their fxxked up KPIs – as long their numbers looks fine heck they care about the rest of the companies. hope the MD/VP is smart enough to see all these and do something. wonder why he did not rock the boat while he can, especially when now he have the upper hand to change the whole fxxking culture.

Foreign talents is one thing….
Pinoys are another thing……..

Their so called ‘professional’ skills and ‘experiences’
are the same standard like our fresh ‘ite’ graduate…
So, what do they contribute when Singapore companies are teaching them rather than them contribute to the companies or Singapore..

They are depriving locals from getting a jobs….
And when they get a job in Singapore.. they think local can’t produce the same sub standard skill which they didn’t possess in the first place….

If they are so GOOD why Philippines is still undeveloped compared to the other South East Asia …
And stop blaming corruption…
Don’t keep complaining without doing anything about it…
All you need is to WAKE UP for the 2nd chance given…
WORK HARDER and STOP comparing urself with other FOREIGN TALENTS!
TYPICAL PINOYS!!

Filipinos should focus more on WORK
rather than long breaks, politics and basketballs

Sounds like management who have lost touch with the employees.

During the good times, the management consider themselves as “management staff” to enjoy all the privileges and perks and clearly separate themselves from the “exempt staff”. During the bad times, they consider themselves as “exempt staff” and “suffer” along with them the 10% pay-cut.
Just look at the ratio of manager to staff now, 1 manager to about 10 staffs. If you were to look at the JD and the bandwidth, you’ll think that it’s a joke. Any senior exempt or exempt staff can easily manage that kind of bandwidth. I think that’s what they call “job creation”, only that these jobs are reserved for the “management”. The company better “LEAN” the organisation before they LEAN everything else…
Not that all managers are bad, just that good ones are out-numbered.
I hope that the TOP management see these remarks and do some soul searching and ask themselves; how come there are so many companies retrenching but this company gets all these “publicities”. Are all the ex-amders more tech savvy than the rest that they know how to leave their messages in the blog? I don’t think so…
If the “management” still don’t wake up and smell the smoke, they will eat dust very soon.
Anyway, round 2 should be coming soon. Let’s open our eyes and see who will be the lucky one who gets the chance of freedom this time round…..

I was ex AMD-ers. It was so sad to see the company that I joined 3 years ago to evolve becoming the home to many politicians. Yes…I saw many redundancies, tai chi every where, keep blaming and looking for scape goats, arrow here and there…rather than solving problems.

I realize we are not living in ideal work, however I could feel and learnt that in AMD: in order for you to be able to be promoted, you don;t need not only to work smarter, but also with cunning spirit – always take the credits from other peopls (or subordinates. This is so unethical, and I saw many of the cases during my times.

And I always see the trend, which are still true to today (based on my current AMD-ers information): The moment there are people who are retrenched, within short times, there are some ‘heroes’ who will be promoted, usually becomes Section Lead or ‘Full Time’ Manager. Are you guys management trying to motivate or de-motivate people??Promoting people in the midst of crisis, where is the sense of sensitivity? No wonder even in the ‘good days’, the turn over of the employees were also so high.

To all existing AMD-ers, good luck, all d best. Keep fighting and hopefully you can ride through the crisis well.

To all ex-AMD-ers (esp who are retrenched), please don’t give up hopes. I was retrenched before also last year, but by Pray (if you believe in God), Persistence, and Patiences, I got new better jobs within one month. Keep fighting man…rather than juz complaining your ex-boss or colleagues or other politicians. Dun become racists as well. I know that many our Phillipinos or Indian or Chinese colleagues also were also retrenched, this is not the matter of ‘racism’ favourism.

Peace….

‘Sad with current AMD’

sorry for the vulgar words posted earlier, was quite pissed off reading the whole thing.

guess the filter had blocked this site to be surfed in AMD. wonder if they are worried that what if this thing spread to TOP management.

Test

how come jw yee and hc koh still hanging there?they are really wasting amd $…..

BH KOH wake up!!!!BH TAN still cheating over time….

hc koh is the one that should go. notice the way he “disappears” when he dun even need to take leave and the way he “delegates” work to his team.

wow is this the blog for people to QQ cuz they don’t have a real job?

Pick yourself up man. Take the retrenchment positively. Take a break go do something fun. Go find a better job.

too much of rubbish in amd already…especially sean ke.shit!

wow.. u guys just bitch about this and that. “Whiners are winners”. Its getting ridiculous with this blog. To everyone that got retrenched, its our plain bad luck and well its the same everywhere, i guess there are others out there who just cant stop the Blah. Anyway, that company was total fcuked up, spending way too much money for nonsense. think it this..way, we got the package and left before it got worst. who knows what will happen, 2 Q down the road.. still cant break even, how are they going to pay the debts?? file for bankruptcy hehe..goodluck guys.

I am not trying to side anybody here.

But i hate to say this, if you want to make comments, i think its really good to give constructive ones rather than just shooting off with uncalled for statements or words in the moment of anger or frustration.

What differences are we from those people who we think or feels that are having a lot of problems with their management skills, integrity, working ethics, etc?

Yes, without a doubt, i believe more or less most people who visited this particular site will in one way or another agrees that there’s really a BIG issue with the current cohort of AMD SGP top management staff.

What we can do here is really just to voice out our grievances (those unfair treatment, double-standard practice, etc) and also on behalf of those fellow guys who’s still currently working inside. I believe those guys who in the comfort of their own home reading this blog will in one way or another feel the same way as us as well. But we need to bear in mind that instead of helping them feeling better, we might actually cause more distress for them.

Honestly speaking, there is really nothing much all of us can do here except voicing out our so-called opinions and thoughts. There are now opportunities and choices for the TOP management to make and they will need to really asked themselves this few questions before they do more damage:

(A) Who are the valuable assets of AMD?

(B) How are they going to determine those assets and according to what standards are they using.

(C) Are they losing valuable assets?

(D) Are they putting the integrity of the company before themselves or are they just putting themselves above the company?

(E) Why are people afraid to voice out within the company even though they are given the avenue and instead they only choose to voice out either they left or when they are been retrenched?

(F) Are the managers, senior managers & even the directors doing their job role efficiently? If so, what kind of standards and gauge is been use to justify their performances? Is the practice efficient?

(G) Is there a huge gap between the top management, middle management and the low management? If so, what are their plans to close up the gaps between those different levels?

(H) Is there effective communication within the organization?

I think this are some of the few questions maybe the heads of AMD SGP really need to ask themselves. Afterall they have heaps of experiences (both good and bad) backing them up.

Its also understood that during bad times, a lot of companies will opt for pay-cut, retrenchment to cut cost & etc. But practice it will great cautious and they must make sure that they keep those contributor within the company and not retrench them because maybe of some minor screwed up or “i don’t like his face and attitude”.

I guess now its up to the head leader of AMD SGP to make his decision & standpoint firm and clear.

My advise to you sir, you are already bleeding out fast, losing a lot of talented people which are like un-polish & un-cut diamonds. (They are like hidden treasures waiting to be uncover) Are you prepare to lose even more? In times like this, you will need to uncover those treasure diamonds fast and make use of their talent and knowledge to bring up the company. Listen not only to your fellow leaders, but open your ears, eyes & heart to the worker as well. You will be in for a surprise to learn how truly capable and a formidable force they are to be reckon with.

No doubt, some people might think or feel that they can recruit more talented people. But look at it in another way, when you have heaps of talented people, you don’t know how to treasure them. Therefore, what makes you think that you have recruited a talented one?

ya people! it might be a blessing in disguise, we never know. no point harping on things that have happened.

take it as a time to reflect on your life. start appreciating things that you own now, the softer side of life that doesn’t have anything to do with work.

i might be too positive here, because some ppl really have to work to meet end’s meat. but i hope everyone will take it positively and think of ways to solve the current situation you are at now rather than whining and pinpointing names.

But sometimes,it is really difficult to differentiate who is the talented one(i mean really talented in work, but not talented in pretending).

So, why is CK Aw still in AMD? He is real good in his “work” while some others who really sacrifice for AMD got lay off…

I am trying to be positive here but the thing is,it’s just not fair that the company cut our heads without knowing much about us. What is the guideline they use?

Or should i also learn to be a good pretender?

well too many ppl with angry and revengeful thought here in this blog. to those who was retrenched good luck and to you and hope u hv a better future. there always something better on the horizon, we just hv to work hard at it. U was laos part of the ppl that hv lazed around in amd since the new type of management style started since Hector took over AMD. pls spare a thought to the amders that are still in the company who is suffering and disorientated due to top management handling of the situation. they are stress out everyday thinking who will be next. too many manager is still around and the company said they wanted to cut cost but only retrench the small fry. it they really meant it they should hv kick out stephanie first as she is the one that hv caused the quality of working in amd worst every year. now they called themselve hs professinal when thay dont know the meaning of professional.
U laso hv to blame hector who brought all these difficulties to amd. now he will getting 3million US$ for splitting the company and be the md of foundry.
blame amd director for giving 4M shares option to Dirk last yr when amd still lost a lot of money.
blame the lean philosophy that Don initiated and forcing us to take in so many managers to run the show.
blame veryboby but also blame ourselve for not brave enough to highlight all these issue to the front.
i am very sad as all the top ppl in amd hv given up hope of the company going through this crisis. u can see it it their action and body language. now all of of them are only thinking of themselve.
i am sad that the camaradie that we had since the first day that i join amd till my last day disintegrated right before my eyes. oh how good was the old days where managers ,operators and all can really “talked” to each other and worked together for the sake of the company. sayonara

ts tan also one of the rubbish in amd.

In singapore amd is a talk but no action company.
alot of meeting, talking, back stabbing but in the end nothing is done. Waste alot of time preparing fanciful presentable with little result. Sometime even worst make up data. Getting vendors to do the job for them. Squeesing them for dateline. Vendor obliged becos they wan your $$$. But now go squeeze you ass. Now those that are still around better wake up and be a real engineer,(not sale person or balls carrier) use your brain & built a better AMD. But i doubt so. All the best to those that have left. GOD BLESS. During the good days, is not becos u are good, is AMD product design. The R&D guys deserve all the credit. We need brain not big mouth. Want to act, go Mediacorp.

Pls wake up, dun spend time blaming heaven & earth.. do something fruitful.. go spend time find a new job or earn more $$ .. dun bloody spend your time here wasting precious time.. life is all abt up & down.. if you adopt take it u are worse than animals

think KY wong is still a good leader. Hope he can do something to revamp the system. AMD, without the politics, is really still a great place to work in. If you have worked in a japanese or korean company, you will know why. so treasure what you have now. Although with all the negativity that i have mentioned, still hope it will stay in singapore for many years to come. Alot of singaporean is still depending on it to bring back the bread.

Cheers……… hope the top guys knows what is happening down there and act soon.

HOPE THE LEADERS HAVE THE VISION TO PROVIDE A BETTER DIRECTION. DON’T ARROW COACH YOUR TEAM. SET THE PACE FOR YOUR TEAM TO LOOK UP TO. SHOW EMPATHY AND COMPASSION. BE COMMANDING WHEN THERE IS NEED.

Hi raymond,

You also dun waste your time here. good night.

wow, lucky i got play with the Wii during company crisis. Still got money to buy Wii huh….cost another $30k for this hot stuff? nice job man….

SINCERELY APOLOGY FOR ALL THAT I HAVE SAID. I AM JUST HAVING A BAD PATCH IN LIVE AND TOO MUCH BOOZE. PLEASE DON’T TAKE IT AS FACTS. FRANKLY AMD IS STILL A WONDERFUL PLACE TO WORK IN. LOOSING IT IS LIKE LOOSING A FAMILY TO ME. AND I WISH IT WILL STILL DO WELL AND HAVE MANY GOOD YEARS TO COME. COMMING OUT WITH INNOVATIVE DESIGN AND MAYBE 8CORE. BEAT INTEL AND BE THE LEADER.

SINCERE APOLOGY TO ALL THAT ARE OFFENDED.

GOD BLESS AND HOPE THAT EVERY THINS GOES WELL FOR THE WORLD ECON AND EVERYONE LIVE A PEACEFUL AND WONDERFUL LIFE.

SPENT MORE TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY. AT THIS POINT IN TIME THEY NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER.

Has anyone in this company actually got promoted to manager because they are capable? or its like.. u scratch my back i scratch yurs..

you guys must learn how to work smart and not work hard like cow!
Who can scratch my back? i can scratch yours if U want..

Good night.

please show empathy to those that are not so lucky. let them vent their frustration & don’t take it personally. These might have some therapeutic effort. Instead of keeping it inside which can be disastrous. As what happened to a family in the US.

For the retrenched employee, they will go through ‘5 stages of grief’

Denial – “This can’t be happening to me”.

Anger – “Why is this happening after all I have done for this company?”

Bargaining – “Can’t I perhaps work part time?”

Depression – “I’m too sad to do anything” or “There’s no point”.

Acceptance – “I’m at peace with what happened, I am moving on”.

so please give them time to get over it.

If you never been there you will never know. Especially for those that are over 40+ and sole bread earners.

My point of view here is just we care.
Racism is discourage to all AMders.
If we took it personal, we’re looser.
Its just a job that both good and bad we share.
We’re just like waters that flows in the river.
When we reach in the ocean, the horizon is wider.
Wherever we go, wherever we meet, we’re friends forever.

AMD is part of our life that just to remember.

By: Pinoy76

Pinoy76 go back to your Pinoyland and drink “halo halo” or eat “Jolibee”. Why Pinoyland so undeveloped with the useless degrees and employers in Singapore are blind to hire pinoys with their unrecognised useless degree similar with a toilet paper use to wipe their backside.

Answer Pinoys!

Good luck to the rest who are still hanging on inside…

God Bless!!!

Q to vincent:
It is because all the managers work smart n not hard ..amd is in this state dumbass. Want to know why no one scratch ur back? People know u’re useless, thats why no one does it. What a dumbass, a small child could figure this out. have u seen someone go borrow money from beggars? Its just as obvious as that right, so stop ur dog yapping in this blog..bitch.

Hi Q,

You are DUMP! I am not talking to U.

It’s spelled DUMB, u dumbass, what kind of manager are u, dont even know English!!

vincent yap is not dump(dumb) i he just stutter. dont u see when he talks his mouth is slower than his brain. Q u must be very very angry with him. did he promised u something and didn’t deliver. last retrenchment coming within this 2 weeks.

Some of the comments here are downright racist… stop blaming others for getting sacked. You cannot change your surroundings but you can adopt to it. You blame politics, filipinos etc etc… but you forgot to blame the only one that can make a difference, the one thing you can control… and that is you.
And you should know by now that politics is everywhere, any company even the MNCs and locals have their own version of poilitics… it the sad truth you have to learn to work around it.

Q, You are DUMP! You are not dumb, but if you think U are. I can’t stop U. Heeeee.

dump definition

dump (dump)

transitive verb

to throw down or out roughly; empty out or unload as in a heap or mass.

Hello Q, You are so Q…are you angry? Why? Cool down!

im not angry, dumbass. Ooh when u put that way..thanks for dictionary, didnt get what u meant earlier. Well no harm no fouls, dumbass. At last u have some decent talk rather than keep mentioning work smart and not like cow huh, dumbass. Shuddup the f up ts tan, u also another dumbass causing amd like this.

hey,ts tan here.pls don’t talk bad about me!

jobless will be getting worst after Q2.

guys enlighten me pls… at my current company we are still hiring like nv before… but no wants to come in cos they think its tough… so i think ppl like them shld stop complaining abt not having jobs.. i think its bullshit… =)

Heard that retrenchment thing starting again next week… good luck guys!!!

Heard from rumor saying that the retrenchment will be taking place either on the 25th or 27th of March… good luck guys…

Good luck !!! it happening already…

hey AMD management,

i’m the same ‘ex-AMDer’ who posted the 2nd comment on this thread. when u retrenched me last month, although disappointed, i respected ur decision. just before i was thrown away, u implemented a 5% ‘pay-cut’ for the staff of my level with a 1-day compulsory unpaid leave per month for shift staff.

but now, i hear that “u call staff on overtime to cover those on unpaid leave”! i’m sorry, i’m actually a very patient guy. but on hearing this, i just cant voice out that its the most ridiculous thing i’ve heard in my entire life! do u guys have any brains left in u? the Masters & MBAs u did in ur whole life taught u this?! if u r gonna tell that its the engineers in the lower level who decides this, lemme tel u..pls resign from ur job if u cant control wat happens anywhere in ur company, whichever level.

by the way, i know that u dont care if u replace a 1.0x unpaid leave with a 1.5x or 2.0x overtime pay. u dont care if the company makes money or not. u dont care how much money the company is leaking everywhere. u dont care even if u get a 5 or 10% pay cut, coz u r still paid for more than wat u deserve..

oh god, wen wil the world end this corporate ruling where the top management just eats n drinks the shareholders money? pls make them understand that their MBAs won’t make them learn how to make(or not lose) money in real life. for that, u need real life experience struggling to bring up a company from scratch!

although i’m still jobless, i’m happy that i’m no more under u. this is the most ridiculous lazy management i’ve worked for. for my loveable colleagues who r still out there..hangon in that company until the economy picks up and go elsewhere if u want to grow in ur career..

good bye!

ex-AMDer are DUMP! Heeee

Sigh… tomorrow hopefully will be the final round of retrenchment from them. Kind of sad really… one of the guys i know will be retrench tomorrow… he’s a great guy but i guess he is just plain unlucky and happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time!!! Anyway… its time to move on with our life. Whether that place stands or close down, it none of our business anymore. We are out of the system.

There is no right or wrong… fair or unfair… Just our luck to work in that kind of disoriented organization, who so-call themselves MNC but function even worst than a SME company.

Do you think they even give a damn on what the rest of the people thought is? Well, the answer is pretty obvious to each and everyone. Its a straight downright NO! To a certain extent, they are pretty shallow no only in their management skills, their think, their mindset, but also their ways of handling things! They keep thinking that they are doing the correct things which in actual fact they way of working no longer works and stands. If it works, the company will not have to go multiple retrenchment and with people undergoing so much mental stress, especially for those who already knew in day one that they will get it because they do not know how to play their bosses ball games!

So guys, let’s move on and forget about it. As long as you are willing to work hard and prove your worth, there are greener pasture out there awaiting us.

Let us advance and overcome, seek, strike and excel in whatever challenge that’s awaiting us!!!

All the best and good luck!

God bless all!!!

They should only implement the pay cut on the Exempt staff & above only. As their pay is also higher. That why ” ex-AMDer” had mention is true on the lower level going on unpaid leave they need to get OT to cover them as there’s already not enough manpower in the line already.

there still will be retrenchment after Q2 i bet. Let see.

yes they are still doing it the wrong way. they are still keeping too many managers ans sup for this retrenchment. this will met the 30% manpower cut that they planned last year. dont know what will happen when all the production will be in one building only next qtr. i think they will still keep the people. i just dont know why. the cost of keeping the managers and sup is just soo high. this is what they call saving costs. on amd ……

another cut after Q2 loh…..

can anybody tell me how come jw yee still hanging around???????????????bh koh,are you blind???????????i fell you are really shittttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now no more unpaid leave..after 5% deduction…..sob sob

Hey terry, haven’t you heard before the phrase, “the blind leading the blind”. So there’s nothing to be surprise and getting all worked up. It’s their way of corporate ploy, tactic, policy together with a lot of involvement in heavyweight politics power play, etc.

Anyway its none of us business anymore, so just sit back relax and enjoy the show. Be it a good one or bad one, just enjoy it. After all we are no longer the actor and actresses, we are also not the directors and producers. If the producers is willing to carry on spending money on the director to direct the show, we as audiences can either sit back and enjoy the show or just switch off our TV or not spending any more time and money to catch the movie.

That’s as simple as it gets. Ha ha ha…

whahahhahah

i am sorry to say but i am kinda happy to see AMD in today state.

generally i feel that the HR killed the company..

they hire shit head to run the company management..

people like Kelvin yang also can be manager..

i dont see reason who cannot be manager

hahahahahahhahaha

destiny, i thought you are saying kelvin jong instead of kelvin yang. well, another useless people manager.

nonono

I am refering to Kelvin yang who started out as a line section manager.

someone who send out email reminding everyone who handle processor must wear “ESD WAIST strap”.
the whole production line went “WTF!!!”

I heard of wrist strap but waist strap is definetly something new.
maybe china does that, i dunnoe. but i am pretty sure singapore we dont

subsequently he went to system group who continue to wreak havoc.

I heard he was retrench.. where i felt heaven was kind to him.
he deserve more to be sacked. rather then retrench.
as he gave no contribution and benefit to the company.

“the blind leading the blind”.cool man…

hey jw yee! You really need to thank bh koh.jw yee,u have to lick bh’s balls and kiss his ass more often liao….because ppl like you doing things like shit & only know how to act busy but still can hang ard in amd.

In December, AMD said it expected to take restructuring charges in the first half of 2009, but could not estimate what the charges would be.

Of the $50 million, about $23 million is related to severance costs and expenses for continuing some employee benefits, the company said. Roughly $13 million is related to contract or program termination costs.

AMD said further cost reduction actions will result in additional charges during the remainder of fiscal 2009 and beyond, which it said it can’t estimate at this time, related to facility consolidations or closures.

AMD expects to complete its restructuring plan in the 2009 fourth quarter

Havok offers a complete modular suite of products that help visual and interactive content developers create more realistic games and cinematic special effects. As the latest software developer to take advantage of ATI Stream technology to leverage multi-core architectures and accelerate execution of highly parallel functions, like real-time cloth simulation, Havok will enable game developers to offer improved performance and interactivity across a broad range of OpenCL capable PCs. AMD has recently introduced optimized platform technologies, such as “Dragon” desktop platform technology, which balance performance between the CPU and GPU with ATI Stream technology to deliver outstanding value.

“Havok is committed to delivering highly optimized cross-platform solutions to our game customers and we are pleased to be working with AMD to ensure that gamers enjoy a great user experience when running Havok-powered games on AMD platforms,” said David Coghlan, vice president of development for Havok. “Unlocking the parallel processing capability of AMD’s hardware provides real advantages to our customers, and the greater the total computing resources available, the better the gaming experience developers can deliver.”

“Havok’s awesome toolset has allowed us to deliver astonishing physics interactions in our games, including detailed real-time destruction and complex ragdoll models, and we are excited about using ATI Stream technology to pursue more astounding in-game accomplishments,” said Andrey Iones, chief operating officer of Saber Interactive. “We are excited that AMD and Havok are working together and leveraging an open standard like OpenCL.”

CHIPZILLA STILL RULES THE ROOST when it comes to shifting silicon according to anal listers Isuppli. The biggest microprocessor maker on the planet managed to keep its spot at the top with a 13.1 per cent share of the global chip sales pie.

Intel’s closest rival Samsung – despite suffering from the trials and tribulations of a difficult market for its bread-and-butter DRAM and NAND products – stayed in second place with a 6.5 per cent share.

With the global chip market shrinking by 5.2 per cent last year, there were always going to be some losers, most notably AMD which slipped out of the top ten (albeit into 11th place) with revenue dropping 7.8 per cent.

And Isuppli reckons that the overall picture points to smaller manufacturers making a better fist of keeping the cash flowing than the big boys.

Qualcomm was probably the standout performer raising its revenue by 15.3 per cent as a result of making major moves on the mobile phone market.

PC SALES may be slowing and Intel’s Atom may be the only product buoying the market (and Intel’s market share) but motherboard makers say they expect AMD’s new 45nm Phenom II processor to come to ChipKong’s rescue in 2009.

According to the latest IDC numbers, PC processor shipments quite literally sank in Q408, with a drop of 17 per cent quarter-on-quarter and 11.4 percent year-on-year.

Whilst the ‘recession proof’ Atom helped Intel snatch an 81.9 per cent unit market share in the fourth quarter, up 1.1 per cent over the previous quarter, AMD dropped to 17.7 per cent, almost one percentage point.

But many believe AMD will be able to win back some of the motherboard channel market, at least, with its 45nm Phenom II, giving the company a much-needed boost.

Since AMD-based motherboards can support any of the firm’s CPU lines, its platforms are attractive to punters who want to switch out their CPUs, without having to change everything else, at reasonable price for performance, no less.

In fact, the only thing really holding back AMD’s newest CPU socket design, AM3, is the highly cost un-friendly DDR3 memory modules it needs.

Whatever, happens, AMD is well aware it will have to fight much harder for an ever-shrinking pie, with IDC reckoning market revenue went the same way as shipments, declining 18 per cent over the previous quarter and 22.2 per cent compared with last year, according to IDC

GLOBALFOUNDRIES, the AMD semiconductor foundry spin-off which likes to shout its own name, has chosen itself a new senior vice president of sales and marketing.

Jim Kupec, whose CV boasts being President of United Microelectronics Company (UMC) and most recently, Chief Operating Officer of eSilicon, an ASIC design and manufacturing firm, will now flounder his way into driving customer acquisition at (*Caps) LOSTANDFOUNDRY.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES, owned in varying parts by AMD and Abu Dhabi based ATIC, will be actively soliciting top-tier chip-makers to use its chip shop, while continuing to wax lyrical about AMD being its first and most preferred customer. Until another firm brings in more lucrative business, of course.

“GLOBALFOUNDRIES is entering the foundry market at the right time and with the right business model to change the landscape of the industry,” noted Kupec adding, “more importantly, we’re entering the industry with the right mindset and resources”.

In a statement, the firm’s CEO, Doug Grose, said his GLOBALFLOUNDER would aim to be a “seamless extension” of customers’ environments, “providing secure capacity, advanced technology and world-class support through global operations that they come to view as their own.”

Let’s hope the Green Goblin bears that in mind next week when possibly, as the rumour and speculation mill has it, Jensen may be meeting with GLOBALFOUNDRY bigwigs to determine whether to make GF NV’s new BFF

Yah, indeed that’s a good news!!! But as far as my memories can bring me back to those bleak days, AMD SGP don’t deal with graphic processor or chipset just as yet, not now. But surely & slowly they are been exposed to some of ATI technology such as latest AMD BGA mobile processor which is been used by HP (if you guys have been actively reading online website & articles).

The BGA setup is nothing new to AMD SGP (they have previously handle it before), its just to the guys inside don’t have the ability, just as yet, to stabilize the whole testing setup. Its all trial & error to squeeze out the bare minimum passing standards. To a certain extent, its kind of a “dodgy” setup.

Looking at it, the good news might be for AMD ATI guys based in Canada instead or guys back in AMD AUSTIN.

Again as far as my memories stretches back to those early days, AMD (SZ,PNG,SGP) all along only deal with TMP for chips meant for Mobile, Desktop & Server.

The facts still don’t change & still remains that the SGP organization is currently still not up to par to handle more advance setup & technology. Reason been very simple, they don’t have the right guys to do the right job! They don’t have the right mindset and focus to take up the challenge just as yet! Unless they settle their internal differences and have a common goals & objectives, else its makes no differences at all.

Come to think of it, this pieces of good news might not be so good for SGP side. They might just used it as “a route, an avenue to escape from their current situation”, not wanting to “face and brave the current storm”. It’s usually the case!

not bad for now for Q2 shift personnel doesn’t need to had a pay cut..

Over the last few years, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD – News) has consistently churned out lower-cost alternatives to Intel Corp.’s (NasdaqGS: INTC – News) offerings. AMD was the first to introduce 64-bit Athlons and Opterons for desktops and servers, respectively. More recent introductions include the Phenom and Barcelona processor families for desktops and servers, respectively.

The company has launched both quad-core and triple-core versions of these products. The triple-core products are expected to be a lower-cost alternatives for price-sensitive customers, although the quad-core products are also expected to do very well. The new technology is expected to provide a number of architectural advantages, including more efficient power usage.

The company was also the first to discuss the possibility of Fusion, which will incorporate a graphics chip at the die level.

The formation of a new company called GLOBALFOUNDRIES is the final peg in AMD’s growth plan. The details of the transaction with ATIC and Mubadala Investment Company are as follows:

AMD is to receive $700 million cash from ATIC (for 700 million Class B preferred shares of GLOBALFOUNDRIES) and $125 million cash from Mubadala (for 58 million newly issued AMD common shares and 35 million warrants for additional AMD shares). Therefore, net cash infusion into AMD shall be $825 million.

There will be transfer of $1.1 billion AMD debt to GLOBALFOUNDRIES.

ATIC shall pay an additional $1.4 billion in cash to GLOBALFOUNDRIES ($0.4 billion for its share in the equity of GLOBALFOUNDRIES and $1.0 billion as convertible debt).

There will be a commitment from ATIC to provide further future funding of $3.6-6.0 billion.

AMD and ATIC are each to receive 50% equity ownership and voting rights in GLOBALFOUNDRIES. Including the convertible impact, AMD’s stake in GLOBALFOUNDRIES shall be 34.2% and ATIC’s stake 65.8%. Mubadala to receive 19.9% ownership in AMD and one seat on the AMD Board of Directors.

AMD will not be required to provide additional funds to GLOBALFOUNDRIES for any reason. However, in the event of a winding up, if the return on GLOBALFOUNDRIES Class B preferred shares is less than 12%, AMD’s return to be adjusted accordingly. AMD to deduct this class B dividend accretion before any distribution to its common shareholders.

The asset-smart strategy described above is expected to enable the company to generate the much-needed volumes of its superior technology products and enjoy the benefits of operating a fabless model. Management focus will now be on developing innovative products.

This is a breather for the company, but a lot depends on execution in our opinion. AMD is pitted against very strong players, and will have to spend heavily on R&D in order to compete effectively

2-Apr-2009
Item 2.05. Costs Associated with Exit or Disposal Activities.
December 2008 Restructuring Plan

On December 29, 2008, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (the “Company”) filed a Current Report on Form 8-K disclosing estimated restructuring expenses as a result of a restructuring plan approved by the Company on December 19, 2008 (the “December 2008 Restructuring Plan”). The Company also stated that further cost reduction actions would result in additional charges in the first half of fiscal 2009, which the Company could not estimate at that time.

The Company now estimates that it will record restructuring expenses of approximately $50 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2009. Of this amount, approximately $23 million is related to severance and costs related to the continuation of certain employee benefits, approximately $13 million is related to contract or program termination costs, approximately $7 million is related to asset impairments and approximately $7 million is related to exit costs for facility site consolidations and closures. Of this amount, approximately $45 million will result in cash expenditures in fiscal 2009. Further cost reduction actions will result in additional charges during the remainder of fiscal 2009 and beyond, which the Company cannot estimate at this time, but which the Company expects will consist of facility site consolidations or closures. Based on information currently available, the Company does not expect that these additional charges will be material to its results of operations. Moreover, the Company expects that the completion date for the December 2008 Restructuring Plan will be during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009.

December 2002 Restructuring Plan

In December 2002, the Company initiated a restructuring plan (the “December 2002 Restructuring Plan”) to align its cost structure to industry conditions resulting from weak customer demand and industry-wide excess inventory. The December 2002 Restructuring Plan included the consolidation of facilities, primarily at the Company’s Sunnyvale, California site, and at sales offices worldwide. With respect to its Sunnyvale, California site, the Company entered into a sublease agreement for a portion of these facilities with Spansion Inc. On March 1, 2009, Spansion filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. On March 31, 2009, Spansion filed a motion in that proceeding in which it indicated that it does not intend to perform its obligations under its sublease agreement with the Company. As a result of this and the Company’s ongoing assessment of the restructuring accrual, the Company expects to record an additional charge of $5 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2009 related to its December 2002 Restructuring Plan

AMD to Take Further Action to Cut Costs
Agam Shah, IDG News Service

Apr 4, 2009 5:50 am

Advanced Micro Devices on Friday said it would take further actions, which could include facility closures, to cut costs as it restructures in an effort to return to profitability.

The further cost reduction efforts are expected to result mainly from consolidations of facilities as the company tries to merge operations, said Drew Prairie, an AMD spokesman.

AMD originally reported the additional cost-cutting measures in a filing on Thursday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The cost reduction efforts will result in additional charges during the remainder of fiscal 2009 and beyond, though AMD couldn’t estimate the exact amount. The efforts will not have a significant material impact on AMD’s operations, the company said in the filing.

Prairie declined to comment on whether the cost cutting would include further headcount reduction, which have been a part of AMD’s past restructuring efforts. In January, the company said it would shed 1,100 jobs and cut salaries.

The actions are part of AMD’s effort to reduce costs to reach break even by the end of the year. Battered by consecutive quarterly losses, AMD has seen demand for chips fall during the recession. It has joined other chip companies, including Intel and Texas Instruments, that are struggling due to constrained budgets and a slowdown in PC demand.

In its filing with the SEC, AMD said it is taking US$50 million in charges related to cost-cutting efforts during the fiscal first quarter of 2009. It includes $23 million in charges related to layoffs during the first fiscal quarter of 2009. The remaining $27 million in charges relate to contract and program termination, and exit costs for facility site consolidations and closures.

In an earlier filing on Dec. 28 with the SEC, AMD said it would take charges in the first half of fiscal 2009 resulting from cost-cutting actions, though it could not estimate the amount at the time.

AMD is set to announce its first quarter results for fiscal 2009 on April 21. The company is trying its best to bring operating expenses in line with the revenue, but it could have a tough time, said Dunham Winoto, senior analyst for semiconductors at financial analyst firm Avian Securities.

The spin-off of manufacturing assets and debt of about $1.1 billion to GlobalFoundries will help reduce costs, but the ATI acquisition will continue to be a burden as competition in the graphics market with Nvidia and Intel heats up, he said.

AMD last month spun off its manufacturing operations into GlobalFoundries, a separate company, formed as a joint venture with Abu Dhabi investment firm Advanced Technology Investment Company. AMD holds a 34.2 percent stake in the new company.

AMD had a limited vision of how the recession would affect them, so cost-structure adjustments are coming on the fly, Winoto said. Intel made staff cuts and other adjustments years ago to align its cost structure so it is in better shape, he said. That has helped Intel be in a better position to deal with the recession compared to AMD.

But AMD hopes to balance its operating expenses with revenue soon, as early as the third quarter of 2009, Winoto said. Spinning off the chip manufacturing efforts and the debt from is a positive step, and other adjustments including staff cuts should help bring the company closer to breaking even.

Unbelievable… they just never change their working style and still carry on with the “love” for doing all the talking and keep on turning in circles to solve problems coming out with really crappy solution & fixes and not tackling those issue head on. No wonder there’s a saying, “a leopard never changes it spots”. That saying really fits them. Really makes me wonder if those people have the skill-set or just bluffing their way through in that place. Guess in a certain way, i should be happy that i’m no longer part of it for a long long time. But its really kind of sad and wasted to see things and hear things of it going this way….

you should felt happy.
dont be sad.
why get sad over a hell hole with shithead running them

haha

lai ah lai ah

visit http://www.jcluckandwishes.com to get your lucky daruma.

Well… i feel sad for those guys who are still working inside, struggling to find a way of survival!!! Some of whom i know are just really struggling to find ways and means to get their moral up but to no avail.

With the ways things are happening and how those higher level people are managing inside that place, there is definitely no way people can have good morale. I guess most of them are super ultimate demoralize and most of them are just waiting, crossing their fingers and hope for the next round of retrenchment (if any) to volunteer themselves.

By volunteering themselves i guess its not because they are helping that place or whatever, its just that they have worked their ass off and yet not getting the respectable rewards or recognition! If they quit, they’ll feel that they lose out and also to a certain extent unfair. So rather, they will just waste their time in that place and hopefully waiting for their turns.

I guess this is more or less the REAL feeling of everyone inside that place. Just that they don’t want to express it openly. To them, its pointless to say anything…. because might ended up getting nothing at the end….

The operations is a big chaos – adopting negative and destructive Asia management styles in one side, and on the other side used the American welfare practises for it advantage. Instead of working united towards survival, upper and mid management are fighting among themselve for power and planting spy seeds into other department, truth talents are chopped or exploited and rotten apples are branded as great leaders. Corrupted practises, lazy work attitude, lack of motivation, poor quality practise, manipulated reports are everywhere!!!”
i’ve seen such practises, those who can work will work til they die! without any recognition! those who can talk will talk their way to the top without working, just send some beautiful emails out. basically it is not a technology company, it’s like a government with so much politics inside! mere commoners can only listen & do as they are told. only top politicians can make it to the top here

shit!

what new man..

Hi “shit”, well said!!! Right on the point!!! But too bad, what says here stay here… if just only those guys in the head office knows about it. Ha ha ha…

shit! NEVER ANSWER ME!

Idiot!

All was peaceful before a coming thunderstorm…

nailin you had been axed , i am very happy because you fuck performance in amd

the lower workers are being stress to the point of resigning soon.

Wondering that is the middle & upper management people going to do about it. However it seems like they are carrying on with their “own sets of policies & mindset” but this time round instead of blowing it out, they are carrying out “silent operation” to save themselves for any further embarrassment. There might be further casualties and sacrifices to be use as “scapegoat” or “trading commodities” or “silently forcing or overloading those non management personnel to carry burden & responsibilities of those middle and upper management without them even knowing about it”. All this i guess is currently part of the practices that is been carry out silently…

No wonder there is a saying, “a leopard never change its spots”…

When will they ever learn, and when will there be a person who will really stand up and take a look into the current bad to worst situation that is currently taking place. They should really look into getting rid of all those personnel that is really not capable at all. Especially those middle and upper management people who only knows how to use their mouth to bluff & “sweet talk” their way through, deceiving, giving false impression to the outside world for their “so-call” capabilities…

And who does not wish to pay for a hosting, is urgent here – the best free web hosting!

there is a way to get rid of those bastard people out of AMD tactically. no need to scold them here. Have you heard of a wick rumours is the best drug to kill any person in the world? rumours in the media is the best approach. why not try it out and their rice bowl in AMD will be broken soon…

The friend recommended recently a good free web hosting, all the same the best service among the free!

Thanks AMD for retrenching me during the bad times to save the company in singapore. Now that orders have increase, i believe everyone in AMD singapore should feel better now. And for that retrenchment that happens to me, i had a blessing in disguise… It actually let me have an opportunity to grab hold of a higher position now. One must be grateful to his past employee… thanks AMD…

Actually you can’t blame those filipinos for coming to s’pore to work. Basically their country has no work for them.

If Philippines is managed by the S’pore Govt, I believe it is not filipinos coming to S’pore to work but rather Singaporeans going to work in the Philippines.

Philippines is so many thousand times bigger than S’pore.
Who do not like to work in a large country.

Moreover S’pore is so expensives nowadays. Do you expect
filipinos to buy a 200 over thousand apartment with the
kind of pay they’re getting. There’s simply no way for them to own a property here unless their salary is 4K to 5K.

Hello nobody, am offered with a principle engineer position. Though its not as relax as working in AMD singapore, i see it as a time to wake up after a break of 4 years in AMD. Nevertheless, i never knew office politics can be so dominance in a company. I’m grate that i have lesson something that the books won’t be able to teach.

hi bryan

little did u noe tat majority filipino came to amd sg are higher averagely paid than singaporeans when comparing same yrs of work exp

oh ya, they get promo faster too

This is a wrong place for local grad to work. This is a sunset industry, your market value goes down exponentially as each year passes by and reaches zero in no time. why ? you are basically a high class operator, don’t challenge boss, prepare nice powerpoint slides and working alongside engineers from 3rd world country. i had to teach one new overseas engineer even on how to use Excel ! if you can accept the same pay and living standards like them, then go ahead and be contented. if not, my advice is you better have plan B right now. Sg is too expensive for the kind of work (or show?) that is ongoing.

who should be the next? Who can give a list?

Another round of retrenchment coming very soon… Ha ha ha… its never ending… Good luck…

Heard that this time round 50 percent or more production strength will be retrench off.. Gossip has it that the total strength will be reduce to around 500 plus..

yes there will be retrenchment again in AMD. total of 400+ employee. 160 operator. but still no news whether they’re letting go of the excess manager. after this there will be mo manager than operator. i’m very sad it’s the same old story . operator gets retrench manager getting more.hope for best……….

Ha ha ha… here it goes again…

Hopefully this time round ,will require to remove the entire group under ck aw.This department is a failure spend alot of money and no result orientated.I’m very sad it’s the same old story .

Ha ha ha… well… not forgetting BHK’s team as well… well in fact might as well just shutdown everything.. save everyone the agony and save itself from further disgrace… here we go again….

Damn right!!! In fact from section manager above some if not all cannot make it! Lack of leadership, lack of management skills, no wonder its had to come to such an ending!!! Ha ha ha… it greatly shows its incompetency!!!

thre should be only one manufacturing manager now that there only one building being use. the rest wlson, rahul and henry should go. let gary take back the position again.too many senior sup in normal and in shift work especially the pr.hope this happen in the next 2 week.

some of the managers worked all their life in amd and had no opportunity to work in other firms to experience other management style. old school. stick in the mud and now, a dinosaur…

That’s why the term Jurassic will come in… they are fossilize dinosaur… Ha ha ha….

Heard that this time round. The rumour about the retrenchment is a false alarm.Anyone can comfirm.

Ha ha ha… pretty sure it will occur in October! Well.. standard style for them to delay and delay… Come just get it over and done with in style…. ha ha ha….

Testing ground in sg is dying as testing cost is getting higher due to the factor of $$$ cost per unit tested. China and india is the best country to go. The only hold back is the IP issue in such country. Anyway good luck to those who is getting their bonus earlier. Opportunity is out in the market dun be dishearten… cheers

Hi, our company is currently having over 40 urgent placement for production operators. Interested parties may contact us personally at DID: 6779 9068 for phone screening. We regret that only Sporean/ SPR / Malaysians may apply for the vacancies. Thanks!

Its coming… OCTOBER 2009… joke beginning all over again…

Promotions freeze for all the lower pay scale employees. The higher paid ones get promoted. With 100++ managers, some with NO reportee whatsoever, they still have the cheek to lay-off operators. Overhead for management ALONE is minimu more then half million dollars per MONTH. Looks like managers will soon be required to run equipments. Reality check, retrenchment is to CHOP those highly paid but under perform. It seems that round after round of lay-offs, the bad apples still stays. AMD will never, I repeat, will never prosper if they keep the OLD people around. It’s a miracle how AMD S’pore still able to be here after years of LOSS. But again miracles to “silently” promote the higher paid ones also happen. Can you believe it, they would rather get an EX-AMD to come back and lead…hahahaha…..if you don’t change the top, you will never change at all…..and also I heard that the workload for the junior are more then the senior….I wonder if the managers are opening their eyes to balance this factor….lastly…..managers…wake up and get involved…be more responsible if there are problems…rather then just saying “I do not want to hear any problem”…if you do not want to hear any problems and yet hoping to get paid every month…..what’s the use of having you there in the first place?

The only things for those AMD Managers to be there is to EAT, TALK, IDLE, & PLAY POLITICS. Oops.. should i say playing GOLF instead? Ha ha ha.. anyway enough said, just sit back, relax & enjoy the show. Its just like one of those taiwanese soap drama. Can’t wait to “know” what is going to happen. Ha ha ha…

who got promoted?

definately next week Tue will start cth cut. Wilson and henry hv lost the battle of the manager. rahul will be the sole winner. the talk now is wilson has already been told that his service will not be required anymore. good ridance. henry lim is a different matter. dont know where he will end up. it will be good fo the company if only one head is leading the manufacturing. the unfortunate thing is all the pinoy has been moved by ariel to a safer places . it is unlikely they will be affected. previously we have process ea ain every shift. now ariel hv placed the pinoy as process ea in every shift. there are 2 in every shift but to make it more pleasing he placed another non-pinoy to work with them. their job is only to report if there is ship / bend lead or any damage to the unit while processing. data hv already collected for many months but no action to solve the issue. the top bosses must be sleeping or given drug by ariel and richard mariano to cloud their vision. conclusion is too many filipino spoil the company . just look at stats.it only need 1 pinoy manager. sk should goooooooooo

Well, it looks like another undecisive leadership from AMD AGAIN!. Hey shadow99, the BIG earners are being promoted in the US site. If promotion is to be freezed, it MUST be same throughout! Heard that 2 of ATI best people have already joined APPLE. Very much because NO FUTURE in AMD leadership, be it SG or Austin. It seems like AMD likes to tell the whole world it’s coming with FUSION but end up being CONFUSED with it’s roadmap. Without the right mix of knowledge and people, the roadmap will only be like JACK SPARROW’S adventure in Pirates of the Carribbean. Talking about the 3 Musketeeers (Rahul, Henry & Wilson), well with Rahul’s relative in Austin holding a high post, I doubt so AMD S’pore will take any action against him. So confirm Henry & Wilson will be axed. Hey don’t forget about our all time favourite GARY and also PH YEE! Come on guys, let’s have a vote within this blog. Just post the names which you personally think should strongly be AXED!!! For me it will definitely be SK, GARY, Yee, NICK. Nick who is leading the facilities MUST go also!!! Damn the stinking toilets.

my vote to be axed will be
gary/ariel/vincent yap/wilson/sk/ph yee/donato/richard mariano/safety engineer/jun mansilungun/ace/meldrik/cs yap/alan tan/perumal/

Seems like all the guys from manufacturing got the vote. How about guys from other department? I think people like BH K, MT, CK A, HC K also need to go! They are long overdue!

Retrenchment has begun….

Any update on the past two day Retrenchment.

from my source not people many got retreated. mostly are those who wanted the package.

not many pple got retrench. Looks like more warning letters will be issued out for little mistake that the employees make in future. As the management has said before. Next will not have retrenchment package, it would be terminating!!!!Have been hearing it over and over again. quite disappointing with the management side. Everybody makes mistakes, if lower rank employee makes mistakes then terminated, how about the upper management side? They tai chi to the pple below them? Well, the answer is Yes. Those KNN pple will find a scape goat or whatever they can think of.
As for the FTrash, they earn more than the locals, take longer breaks than other pple. Yet they din any get the retrenchment.Yet for others earn less, work harder, get retrench. Well, i think the world is not fair for those who contribute and work hard for the company. Must work smart like the FTrash. Learn from them. There is a saying:if you cannot win them, join them.
There is a place in the company where all FTrash are together in the same place.I do not understand what the HR are doing. Are they sleeping or just bochap? How can all FTrash be together, isn’t it suppose to be separated? I think KY Wong should restructure them.
This company is good but the pple sucks. Makes me want to puke.Management(Senior engineer and above) tok cock sing song.mostly are FTrash. infront laugh at you, behind automatic M16 shooting like hell. WE no armor or shield to withstand. Sign…….got to concentrate on other things.

i agree with disappointed of what he is posting earlier. I salute you…U can even write down their names out in the open.

Who got retrenched?

this month started again

this round, i heard: ph yee, nick ong, st tan, pk ong, lilian loke, gary lee.

total got about 180 persons, with ard 10 managers.

sadddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd

Any future retrenchment in Nov or december? anybody got any info?

Any engineers got affected?

Its very sad to see people leaving. The punch statement of this round is “skillset”. Employees were retrenched because of skillset mismatch.Very clever move.. After re-org, employees specialised in different skillsets are assigned to work on entirely new things which they have to pick up from scratch and even before they get proper training and time to prove their abilities, they get retrenched. Can guess whts goin on in the backstage….

not true… some alot of skillset also got retrented.

Since promoting Bob Rivet to the position of Chief Operations and Administrative Officer, Advanced Micro Devices has been running without a dedicated CFO for the last year or so. Now the permanent CFO has been named, so AMD can move on with a fully functional management team. That’s great — but I’m feeling a little queasy about the final choice.

Rivet had been pulling double duty ever since AMD began its search for a CFO. Rivet came to AMD in 2000 from the semiconductor division of Motorola shortly after the company brought on Hector Ruiz, who would later become the CEO. Now Ruiz is out, Rivet is fully installed in a new role, and the management team looks very different from the one that took AMD through some of its highest highs and most miserable lows.

Tom Seifert, the new man for the job, is a former executive at German chip designer Infineon AG and then memory chip maker Qimonda. I don’t have anything against Seifert personally, and he certainly has a lot of experience in the semiconductor industry. AMD wouldn’t spend a year looking for an executive only to settle for anybody less than solidly qualified for the job. But mention Qimonda and I can’t help but be reminded of that company’s recent bankruptcy. As an AMD investor, that connection does not make me comfortable. Still, Qimonda’s demise was the result of a brutal price war between memory titans like Samsung, SanDiskand Micron and hardly Seifert’s fault. We can give the guy a break.

AMD’s entire business model looks radically different than it has in recent years, during which Intel has been running circles around it, but we’re seeing the first stages of a very different AMD now. Let’s hope this new management team can successfully guide the company through a difficult phase in which it sheds assets and re-focuses on the engineering of its products.

Did AMD upgrade or downgrade its management team today? Does Seifert’s experience trump his association with Qimonda’s descent into bankruptcy? I’m dying to know what you think, and the comments box below is waiting for you.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., a semiconductor company, provides processing solutions for the computing, graphics, and consumer electronics markets in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. The company serves original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers, and third-party distributors through direct sales force and independent sales representatives. It has a strategic relationship with StudioGPU. The company was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

disappointed: not enuf luck, ur toto only hit 4 out of 15

Tom Seifert, John Daugherty, and other so called top level executives…they are all just the specialists in making the company financial status in ‘red’ or bankrupt.
Look what happened to Chartered Semicon under Mr Daugherty leadership? Then he came to AMD to make some bullshit management hoo haa statements and programs.

To ex-amd-ers on October 12, 2009 @ 10:19 pm,

That is my feeling also. But it is not just the newer top guys, the whole senior management team as well. They are just a bunch of politicians who is focused on fattening their own pockets in the shortest time without a thought for the company’s long term well being

It is just as bad in AMD Singapore. The management is just a team of puppets, acting out the wishes of their puppeteer master, and playing politics

ur right, AL

not 2 mention that there r lotta new hirings + promotions going on in oct alone

To not FT,

Question: How many well deserved promotions can you count?

I would not be surprise if the answer is a fat ZERO

Chances are, any promotion or hiring is just power consolidation / struggle

not really a FAT 0

there r minority that really deserve the promo

sadly, it only happen at times like this, cos is 2 retain these people

on may 18th 2009

DONE WITH LAYOFFS
Sensing stability in an industry pummeled by the worst recession in decades and a horrendous decline in IT spending, Meyer said the company was done with restructuring and layoffs.

so, the activity in singapore nt consider restructuring/layoffs

then is it call retrenchment?
is up 2 you all 2 decide

To not FT,

No matter how “deserved” any promotion or reward is, giving and receiving any of them now is just plain insensitive and inconsiderate

Just my opinion

What work can you offer to a fresh graduate woman of Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management major in Hotel and Restaurant Management? I am 21 years of age and in good health. I’ve been trained in Singapore for six months at the stablishment of Singapore Swimming Club, Tanjong Rhu Road Singapore.
At present, I am working Receptionist in Baywalk Garden Hotel and Restaurant Management. My present job is good but I wanted something better and more challenging.

Wrong hole Baby

They cut 5-10 managers. But now they promoted some 15-25 snrs to mgmt. Ironic!!! Rest of the non-exemp & hourly need to wait. I wonder how things work in AMD. The higher your pay the easier to justify promotion. One fast promotion is definitely King Foi. Maybe Ace is also the next one to be promoted. Sigh!!! They wanted to follow the Japanese lean practice but dare not change the way they work.

That’s their business model, their way of operating business. One point to note though, the SGP operation will never cease because they play the ball game too well to cover their own asses and smartly not putting their asses on the line. Only those not playing the ball game will be outcast.

Yes, definitely agrees that KF promote fast. In fact he is one of the so-call “high flyer” within that current organization that can withstand and take the toll of the storm. Another one of the “legend” within that organization should be ZZ.

We cannot deny the fact that both of them are in their own capacity fit very much well into the current situation that the organization is facing. They have their strengths and their weakness. In some Chinese context, we can say that they are just so happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Nevertheless, depending on people like them will never be able to bring the local SGP organization to the next level of success. Even if they do earn success, it will be short-lived. They really need CREDIBLE and PROVEN RESULT people in the organization that can DELIVER PROFESSIONAL and HONESTLY and not some people who just covering their tracks and finding temporary solutions to mask over the problems.

In fact if one look carefully at the operation of SGP organization, its actually moving in a repetitive cycle. We must agree to a certain extent, there are improvements been made but at a very very slow rate. Which for a technology based organization its doing them more harm than good.

Knowing all these, its seriously their CHOICE how they want to model the organization. The BALL IS NOW IN THEIR COURT to change things for the better. If the higher management people are smart enough (I’m not referring to those sitting up there in SGP), they should re-hire back those people who truly deliver results and success to the organization.

For a company who cling on words like TALENTS, they are in fact losing a lot of TALENTED people which can help to turn the organization around and expansive its foot-hold in SGP.

Next round of RIF coming in December. 10% across all.

Anyone know who else is promoted from exmept to Snr Exempt? My boss bluff that promotion will only resume in December.

Managers already just submitted namelist. Names will be out very soon.

It’s not true

theres so many promo in oct, from hi 2 lo lvl, wonder who would lie 2 u like tat, he think u idiot?

1 of e main reason given for promo is 2 retain good employees
believe e managers hav a yrly goal 2 maintain e turnover rate which most of u hav heard b4

so meaning e lazy/worthless/all-talk-but-cannot-walk employee consider good performing
and e rest basically sux n hang there?

if is not 4 those under e ’sux’ group of ppl, u think e company can go on?

If you dunno means u may kenna coz yr boss never tell u. Even if really not true, u wait after CNY.

Well… whether there is any retrenchment a not.. its really not relevant anymore… simply because those who want to get promoted (doing any ways and means, carry balls, back-stabbing, sweet-talking, bootlicking, etc..) already got what they want… the rest are just there to fill in the numbers…. even if there is really a retrenchment.. its usually those “numbers” that will go… kind of surprise at the number of people that got promoted… funny thing is, those people upon promotion change their attitude in a total 360 degree…. suddenly its almost they become another person… even the way they talk is totally different…. one word to describe… arrogant…

Christmas is next week and I have so much shopping yet to do. Why do I have this feeling I’ll end up being one of those last-minute shoppers you always see at midnight on Christmas Eve on the news? Any ideas what to get my wife? I’m all ears.
Asian stocks took a bit of a hit overnight. The Heng Seng and the Nikkei were off 1.2% and 0.13%, respectively. European stocks were down in early trading, too. And here in the US, we’re currently trading lower.
Here’s what I’m seeing this morning:
Intel (INTC):
Per the AP: “The Federal Trade Commission sued Intel Corp. on Wednesday, looking to block pricing deals and other tactics the government said the world’s biggest chip maker has used to snuff out competition.”
Is this Advanced Micro Device’s (AMD) big break and/or Intel’s Achilles’ heel?
1. First off, I have no idea how it’s going to shake out with Intel and the FTC. That said, I don’t think this is a reason in and of itself to belly up big-time to AMD and to entirely shun Intel (although I do think the outcome could ultimately have some negative effect). When it comes down to it, AMD is like Intel’s little sibling, and in my opinion, it always will be. Worse yet, it’s a little sibling that needs money.
2. If I were long AMD, I’d consider taking some money off the table at this point. And if I were long Intel, I’d wait to see if it pulls back. But between them, I think Intel’s the better pick.
Harley Davidson (HOG):
Justin Sharon points out in his article today that Goldman lowered the company to Sell.
I agree with the rating and don’t think I’ll be taking a spin in the stock or on one of its motorcycles anytime soon. I think the average consumer is going to be cheap over the next year (maybe longer) and will probably be shopping mostly at places like Target (TGT) rather than spending big bucks on bikes. When the economy finally shifts and average people start having a little extra money set aside for big toys, I might change my mind. But right now, at more than $25, I’m not a taker.

Well we have people with only 1 reportee which in turn has another reportee…..Kuan Yong is one example….

Hmmm….are our Engineers worth calling Engineers???
I even heard that some engineers don’t even know how to troubleshoot ANYTHING at all. Well pity AMD to have such engineers. If engineers are only to send report, then something is really wrong with the engineer position…

Well enough said….Good luck to AMD..

The problem is that hiring & promotion is freeze now till April hence u will see some supervisors with minimal or no reportees at all. These people used to have reportees but all kenna RIF.

fyi
there r many promo n some hire from oct to dec 09
there r over 20 hire in jan and more in feb 10
more promo paperwk r submitted up there
now wait n c they chop off manufacturing dep
