AMD Singapore starts ‘temporary salary deduction exercise’

According to an internal e-mail sent by AMD’s human resources department, posted on Singapore Retrenchment Blog by what looks like a reliable AMD insider, “we (AMD) will be carrying out a temporary salary deduction exercise for all employees effective February 2009.”

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. last month announced plans to cut 1,100 jobs, 9 percent of its global staff, and slash the remaining employees’ pay as the chip maker hopes its third round of layoffs in a year can help it get through a brutal market for computer sales.

Vice presidents and other top management will have their pay cut 15 percent, other salaried workers will go down 10 percent, and pay for hourly workers will fall 5 percent. AMD said the pay cuts are temporary. The memo also states that there will be a scheduled office shut down every month:

… Exempt (Normal Shift) staff will be contributing 10% salary deduction per month. Staff will take 2 days off in a month, which is 1 day of scheduled Office Shutdown and the remaining 1 day to be arranged with your manager by your application of Authorized Leave.

… Exempt (Shift) staff will also be contributing 10% salary deduction per month. Staff will take 1.5 days off in a month, which is to be arranged with your manager by your application of Authorized Leave.

… Non-Exempt & Hourly (Normal Shift) staff will be contributing 5% salary deduction per month. Staff will take 1 day off in a month, which is the scheduled Office Shutdown.

… Non-Exempt & Hourly (Shift) staff will also be contributing 5% salary deduction per month. Staff will take 1 day off in a month, which is to be arranged with your manager by your application of Authorized Leave.
